Notes:
- Title: iconoclasm – The title of the song means "the action of attacking or assertively rejecting cherished beliefs and institutions or established values and practices." Usually in a religious context. The people performing this action are called "iconoclasts" and are usually people who do not care about the status quo but think in a completely new direction. Historically they were people who destroyed religious sculptures and paintings. (source)
- Reinzi Overture - The Rienzi overture is a classical piece by Richard Wagner. The nazi's used it to open the Party Rallies and Hitler himself owned the manuscript (which was lost in the fire after his death). (source) For those who want to listen, it is this classical piece.
- An twisted honoring / ijou keiai - Liberal translation. Ijou refers to 'strange', 'distorted' and could be seen as opposite to 'normal', whereas keiai refers to both 'respect and affection' aimed at something. I translated based on the context - the Reinzi overture is being honored, loved and respected but in a very distorted way.
- Nazi salute / minshuu keirei - While literally, this means 'people's salute', there is a strong link to the nazi salute (performed by the people.
- Horst Wessel - Horst Wessel was a young German SA-militiaman who was shot in action. Afterwards the nazi's turned him into a martyr - he was made into a nazi symbol for sacrificing one's life. The Nazi Party anthem was called the 'Horst Wessel Song' in his honor. You can find more details on wikipedia and in Music and Politics II, 1, winter 2008.
- Party number seven / touin bangou -seven- - Referring to the NSDAP party list (NSDAP - from the German Nationalsozialistische Deutsche Arbeiterpartei - meaning National Socialist German Workers' Party; aka the Nazi Party). Number seven was, apparently, attributed to none other than Adolf Hitler. (Source - post 8 by jeffhan373)
- Sucking up the sweet sweet nectar / mitsu wo nameteru - nameteru means licking, but in this context, sucking seemed more fitting. Also, "sweet sweet" is not included in the Japanese, but I added it for emphasis. I am interpreting this that 'party number seven' is indulging in taking away the hard earned goods (nectar) of others. I may be wrong, so I didn't go further in adding my interpretation to the translation.
- Awakening / kakusei - in the sense of 'awakening to something', rather than literally waking up.
- The trap to burn the witches to nothing / Majo wo yakitsukusu keikaku no wana - I am leaving out the word keikaku, meaning "plan". (...) keikaku no wana would mean "the trap of the plan of (...)". I am open to suggestions for re-translation.
Alternatively: 'They fell in the trap of planning to burn all the witches.' - Propaganda / sen'nou enzetsu - Literally it says "Brainwashing speeches". Nazi's were good at their brainwashing propaganda.
- Goose-Step - The goose-step is a form of military march. While marching in parade formation, troops swing their legs in unison off the ground while keeping each leg rigidly straight. Originated in Germany in the 18th century (so before WWII) (Source)
- State worship / kokka suuhai - Literal translation. I kind of wanted to translate with "Nationalism" (commonly kokashuugi is used for this), but decided to keep in the 'worship'-theme of things.
- The trap of the powerful person's inevitable fall / Jousha hissui no kotowari no wana - I left out the word kotowari, meaning something like "(universal) truth (of things)". Kotowari no wana would be like "the trap of the truth / justice (of)". It just doesn't fit in the English sentence, but the reader needs to be aware that it is there. I am open to suggestions.
Alternatively: 'They fell in the trap that it is a fact all people in power will inevitably fall.'
